Cultural Arts Commission
The Cultural Arts Commission consists of seven members who reside in the surrounding Willits area, each serving a four-year term. These commission members are dedicated to the promotion and advancement of cultural and artistic activities. The Commission meets on the third Monday of each month at 5:00 p.m., in the classroom at Willits Center for Arts.
The Cultural Arts Commission is an advisory agency to the City Council and has the following purposes and functions:
- To coordinate artistic and cultural events sponsored by organizations within the Willits community, and to develop cooperation among such organizations in the timing and planning of their events;
- To encourage, assist in, and develop programs and events for the cultural and artistic enrichment of the community;
- To encourage and develop an appreciation of the need to preserve and enhance the physical appearance of the city and to promote its orderly growth; and
- To advise the City Council in matters pertaining to the beautification and cultural enrichment of the city.
The major goal of the Commission has been the renovation of the Willits Center of the Arts.

Airport Commission
The Willits Airport Commission consists of seven members who reside in the surrounding Willits area, each serving a four-year term. The Commission meets on the fourth Monday of each month at 4:00 p.m., at City Hall.
The Airport Commission is an advisory agency to the City Council and has the following duties:
- Study, consider and develop long range plans for the ultimate development of the Willits municipal airport, giving due regard to any master plan adopted by the city, and to federal and state regulation.
- Ascertain the type of services to be rendered and keep abreast of developments in the aviation industry so as to be able to inform the City Council on all pertinent matters concerning airports, airport law, and aviation generally.
- Study and recommend on matters relating to airport improvements, including methods of financing and lease arrangement.
- Review and recommend on special permits and proposals, as required, which deviate from the airport development plan.

The Willits City Council consists of five elected Council members, one of whom is chosen by the Council members to serve as Mayor and one of whom is chosen to serve as Vice Mayor. The Council also serves as the Willits Planning Commission and the Willits Community Development Agency.
Meetings: The Council holds regular meetings on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers.
City Pool

Be Safe! Learn to Swim at the Willits City Pool!
The Willits City Pool provides a safe environment for families to enjoy the summer months. The pool provides many activities such as public swim, swimming lessons, pool parties, and adult swim. The pool will open on Monday, June 14 th, 2004.
Public Swim:
Public Swim is open to everyone from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM seven days a week. The cost for admissions is $3.00** per person and the cost for a 20 swim pass is $54.00**
Swimming Lessons:
There are four morning and evening swimming lesson sessions offered this summer. All lessons are for one half-hour, Monday through Friday, for two weeks. Sessions will be held in the mornings from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM and in the evening from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM. The present cost for swim lessons is $42.00** for the first child, $36.00** for the second child, and $30.00** for each remaining child. You will be able to sign-up for swim lessons anytime between the hours of 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, Monday, June 14 th through Sunday, June 20 th for our first session beginning on Monday, June 21 st. Feel free to stop by the pool or call 459-5778.
Pool Parties:
Pool parties are weekend activities only. They can be scheduled for any Saturday or Sunday from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM or 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. The cost is $174.00** for two guards and up to 40 swimmers in the water. Other quotes are available upon request.
Masters Swimming:
Masters swimming is a program which provides time for adults to enjoy exercise and a friendly atmosphere. Masters swimming is from 6:00 AM to 7:00 AM or 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM. It will begin in the morning on Monday, June 14 th and in the evening on June 21 st. The price is $3.00** per swim or you can buy a 20 swim pass at $54.00**.

About Willits
Willits is a city located in Mendocino County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,073.
The city is the eastern terminus of the California Western Railroad (otherwise known as the “Skunk Train”), running through the Coast Redwood forests to coastal Fort Bragg. Willits is at the center of Mendocino County and its redwood forests, calling itself ” the “Heart of Mendocino County and Gateway to the Redwoods.”
Willits is the home of the Frontier Days & Rodeo, the oldest continuous rodeo in California (held every July) and the Mendocino County Museum. Willits was the final home of the racehorse Seabiscuit: Ridgewood Ranch, where Seabiscuit trained, recuperated, and lived out his retirement, is located a few miles south of the city.
The city is the hometown of Tr Cool, drummer for the band Green Day.
Willits Geography:
Willits is at the center of Mendocino County in the Little Lake Valley, 20 miles (32 km) north of Ukiah on U.S. Highway 101 (otherwise known as the Redwood Highway). The town is located at 39°24’16″ North, 123°21’3″ West (39.404357, -123.350947).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.3 km2 (2.8 mi2). 7.3 km2 (2.8 mi2) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Willits Demographics:
As of the census of 2000, there are 5,073 people, 1,935 households, and 1,230 families residing in the city. The population density is 699.5/km2 (1,813.7/mi2). There are 2,013 housing units at an average density of 277.6/km2 (719.7/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 83.72% White, 0.63% African American, 3.53% Native American, 1.16% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 7.08% from other races, and 3.84% from two or more races. 14.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,935 households out of which 35.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.2% are married couples living together, 17.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.4% are non-families. 30.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.15.
In the city the population is spread out with 29.2% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 90.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $26,283, and the median income for a family is $36,193. Males have a median income of $30,983 versus $22,089 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,642. 14.5% of the population and 11.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.0% of those under the age of 18 and 4.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
