The Public Works Department fosters the beauty of Willits by maintaining the City’s infrastructure, including streets, traffic safety, storm drains, sidewalks, water distribution system, sewer collection system, City building facilities, City airport, bridges, and landfills. The Public Works Maintenance crew has a broad range of experience in infrastructure maintenance and equipment operations.
In addition to the ever important field work, this department is responsible for a wide range of City administrative duties. We handle project advertisement and bid negotiations for City owned construction projects and once the projects are awarded and construction begins, we perform our own construction management and inspection. Most of the City’s construction projects are partially funded by various State and Federal grants; thereby requiring that we manage those grants in conjunction with the project.
We act as a liaison with various agencies, such as State Water Resources Control Board, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the Willits Unified School District and various Mendocino County Agencies, including the Department of Transportation and the Department of Air Quality Management.
The Public Works Department is also responsible for managing and maintaining the City’s parks and recreation facilities, which include 2 beautiful family parks with playground equipment, 4 baseball fields, 1 soccer field, 1 skate park, 1 community pool, 1 4-court tennis court, a 3 acre open use field, and 3 small neighborhood parks.
