The City of Willits owns and operates the Willits Wastewater Treatment Plant, collection system, and water reclamation facilities. The plant also receives untreated domestic wastewater from the adjacent collection systems of Brooktrails Community Services District, Meadowbrook Manor, and the Sherwood Valley Rancheria.

The Willits Wastewater Treatment Plant is an extended aeration plant. The treatment plant went through recent upgrades including installation of an elevated headworks, an aeration basin, two clarifiers, an ultraviolet disinfection system, and 30 acres of enhancement wetlands.

Recent upgrades have brought the treatment plant process up to current regulatory standards. Effluent produced by the plant is released to Outlet Creek during the wet season or used to irrigate local pastures during the dry months. Disposal to Outlet Creek is permitted, conditioned on a 10:1 ratio from October 1st – May 15th. The City is permitted to irrigate approved pasture lands during the summer.

The City has adopted a Sanitary Sewer Management Plan (SSMP) that outlines preventative, operating, maintenance, and management guidelines for the sewer collection system. The SSMP can be viewed by following this link . Public comments about the City’s SSMP are accepted by writing to the following address
